Paeng Nepomuceno sets new record

SIX-TIME world champion Paeng Nepomuceno established a new national record for a four-game series Wednesday at the 41st Manila Tenpin Bowling Association championships at Bowling Inn on Taft Avenue.Nepomuceno rolled 12 consecutive strikes for a perfect 300 game right in his first game during the singles qualifying.

He rolled 11 straight strikes in his next game—almost a perfect game—for 299, before scoring 268 and 256 for a new national record of 1123 and a scintillating 280.75 average.

Representing PBC and Nutrilite, Nepomuceno erased the previous record of 1103 set in 1994 by Marcus Reyes.

Nepomuceno rolled 23 successive strikes in the first two games only to be stopped by a stubborn 7 pin.

“I am happy that at 52, I am still competitive,” said the only four-time World Cup champion. “I surprised myself with the way I bowled yesterday and am happy I did it in a Philippine Bowling Congress Open tournament.”

Nepomuceno, a USBC (United States Bowling Congress) International Ambassador for bowling, was honored by the Guinness World Records for the third time a few months ago for having the most career world titles at 118.

Paeng was also named FIQ Bowling Athlete of the Millennium.

Already an international bowling hall of famer, he was honored on April 19 in Barnsley, England, with the World Bowling Writers Mort Luby Jr. Distinguished Service award for his lifetime contribution to the sport.
