Mayweather to focus on Marquez, then Pacquaio

MANILA, Philippines – (UPDATE) Comebacking Floyd Mayweather Jr. said he wants to focus on his upcoming bout with Juan Manuel Marquez first before thinking about fighting Filipino pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao.

In an interview with CNN, Mayweather did not divulge what exactly got him injured causing his fight with Marquez to be rescheduled on September 19.

The bout, originally set this month, will take place at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

Asked whether Pacquiao impresses him as a fighter, Mayweather talked more about his Mexican opponent.

“Marquez impresses me. We are ready to rock and roll,” said the flamboyant Mayweather, who retired undefeated and was formerly the acknowledged pound-for-pound king.

“As a boxer, you try not to focus on getting hurt,” he added, saying his retirement helped him grow mentally and gave him a chance to know himself more and his family.

He also hinted of improved relationship with his dad, Floyd Mayweather Sr., and even defended the latter for Ricky Hatton’s devastating loss to Pacquiao.

“I never split with my dad. It’s just that I was training with my uncle Roger (Mayweather). Me and my dad are still working,” Mayweather said.

“He (Mayweather Sr.) got some slack for Ricky Hatton’s loss. But he had a game plan and Ricky just didn’t follow it.”
