Federer said he can beat Nadal in Madrid

Jelena Jankovic beat Nuria Llagostera Vives of Spain 6-2, 6-1 Sunday to reach the second round of the Madrid Open, a joint ATP and WTA Tour tournament.

Agnes Szavay of Hungary upset 12th-seeded Flavia Pennetta of Italy 6-3, 6-7 (2), 6-2 in the first round of the clay court event at Madrid’s new “Magic Box” tennis center.

On the men’s side in the first round, 16th-seeded Tommy Robredo rallied to defeat Nicolas Kiefer of Germany 3-6, 6-2, 6-2, and Spanish wild card Juan Carlos Ferrero beat Igor Kunitsyn of Russia 6-3, 4-6, 6-4.

Meanwhile, Roger Federer said he could still beat Rafael Nadal, even on the Spaniard’s favorite surface.

“I know I can beat him on clay after having played so many matches against him on this surface,” Federer said.
